Remembrance Day Events and Activities in Burnaby

On Saturday, November 11, Burnaby will commemorate Remembrance Day with various events and activities across the city.

Mayor Mike Hurley has proclaimed Oct. 27 to Nov. 11 as Poppy Weeks in Burnaby, honoring the sacrifices of Canadians in various conflicts, as well as the RCMP and first responders. The Royal Canadian Legion branches in Burnaby will also organize parades and ceremonies, inviting the community to pay their respects.

Poppy Weeks in Burnaby

During a city council meeting on Oct. 30, Steve Jeske, from the Royal Canadian Legion Burnaby, Branch 83, distributed poppies to meeting attendees and gave a presentation on the significance of the poppy campaign. He said that this time of year, the legion honours the sacrifices of Canadians in various conflicts, including the two World Wars. He also acknowledged the contributions of the RCMP and first responders, who have faced many challenges in the past few years.

Coun. Sav Dhaliwal read the mayor’s proclamation, which stated that “the lapel poppy is a visual pledge to honour Canada’s veterans and remember those who sacrificed for the freedoms we enjoy today.” The proclamation also explained that the Royal Canadian Legion’s poppy campaigns collect funds to maintain commemorative structures and provide other services related to those who died in the line of duty.

Royal Canadian Legion Parades and Ceremonies

Every year, the Royal Canadian Legion branches in Burnaby organize parades and ceremonies on Remembrance Day. This year, Royal Canadian Legion Branch #148 in North Burnaby will hold a parade and ceremony starting at McGill Library and continuing to the cenotaph in Confederation Park. The parade will commence at 10am.

Royal Canadian Legion Branch #83 in South Burnaby will start its parade at Legion 83, 5289 Grimmer St. The parade will begin at 10:20am and will march to the cenotaph on Nelson and Imperial, where a ceremony will take place at 10:55am. Everyone is welcome, and Branch #83 will serve lunch afterward at 5289 Grimmer St.

These events and activities are a great opportunity for Burnaby residents to show their gratitude and appreciation for those who have served and continue to serve our country. Let us remember them on this special day.
