New Westminster is in the Process of Organizing a Celebration on the Pattullo Bridge, Just Before its Scheduled Demolition.

If you’ve ever dreamed of hosting an event on the Pattullo Bridge, your wish might come true.

A motion has been passed to initiate the planning of a three-day party on the Pattullo Bridge prior to its removal. The replacement project for the Pattullo Bridge is set to be finished by 2024, after which the old bridge will be dismantled.

New Westminster Mayor Patrick Johnstone will be writing a letter to the province to gauge their interest in the proposed three-day event. City Councillor Daniel Fontaine introduced the motion during Monday night’s session, expressing his hope for the party to take place during the upcoming summer.

Fontaine emphasized the significance of celebrating the bridge before its iconic 86-year-old structure is replaced next year. He acknowledged the bridge’s deep connection not only to New Westminster but to the entire region. Located at the heart of Metro Vancouver, the bridge has served as a vital link for transportation across the Fraser River for several decades.

Fontaine mentioned that the event aims to serve as both a memorial for those who have lost their lives or been injured on the bridge over the years, as well as a celebration. The planned party will feature live entertainment and food trucks, with Fontaine welcoming suggestions and ideas from the public for the three-day festivities.

Fontaine expressed his enthusiasm for engaging with the community and hearing their preferences for the event, stating, “I would love to involve the public and gather their input on what they would like to see during the three-day celebration.”
