In a significant stride towards bolstering Burnaby’s healthcare landscape, the BC government unveiled the second phase of the Burnaby Hospital redevelopment plan on September 13, 2023. This ambitious endeavor encompasses the establishment of a cutting-edge cancer center and a 160-bed in-patient tower. The first phase, presently underway, is slated to be fully operational by early 2025, marking a substantial leap forward in healthcare infrastructure.
Despite concerns and speculations surrounding budget overruns, Chief Project Officer and Executive Director of the Burnaby Hospital Redevelopment Program, Noor Esmail, has affirmed that the project remains on budget and on schedule, albeit acknowledging the unpredictability of unforeseen events like pandemics, which might impact timelines and budgets.
Burnaby, one of BC’s fastest-growing communities, is expected to welcome over 100,000 more residents by 2050. Burnaby Hospital, which has seen limited upgrades over the past four decades, is poised for a transformation.
Esmail stated,
“The project is our response to aging infrastructure, aligning with current standards, and expanding our capacity to meet the escalating demand for healthcare services.”
The hospital’s redevelopment will usher in state-of-the-art facilities, incorporating the latest treatment technologies and enhanced capacities.
Phase one, set for completion in 2025, will precede phase two, which involves the demolition of the entire West Wing and the Cascade Building, paving the way for a seamless transition of equipment and staff to the new extension of phase one.
Phase two, encompassing the cancer center and in-patient tower, is projected to conclude by 2030.
Importantly, Burnaby residents can rest assured that there will be no delays in treatments. The hospital will operate at full capacity throughout the redevelopment, with necessary measures in place to ensure ongoing healthcare access.
Funding for this monumental project is a collaborative effort between the province, the Burnaby Hospital Foundation, private donors, and esteemed contributors like the Beedie family, who generously donated $8 million. Phase one will add approximately 15,500 building gross square meters, while phase two will introduce an additional 26,000 building gross square meters, almost doubling the hospital’s current size.
In addition to the new cancer center and in-patient tower, the project involves expanding emergency services, with an initial addition of 23 bays in zone one and further expansion during phase two, accommodating 104 treatment spaces. The hospital is also set to employ new medical and support staff, with an estimated 960 additional Fraser Health staff anticipated during the project’s phases.
Although the journey is challenging, Esmail emphasized the profound impact of this endeavor:
“Working in healthcare is so rewarding, so fulfilling. It’s not just a construction project; it’s about life and death. It’s a privilege to be a part of it.”
At present, around 65 Fraser Health staff are dedicated to supporting the Burnaby Hospital redevelopment project, underscoring the community’s commitment to transforming healthcare for a brighter, healthier future.
