About this Project
Central Park spans 86 hectares and offers lush forests, scenic trails, recreation and sports facilities, and a variety of amenities while hosting numerous community events. To ensure its ongoing development, the City of Burnaby is creating the Central Park Master Plan (CPMP) — a long-term vision to guide park improvements over the coming decades.
The CPMP will be developed in two phases. Phase 1 focuses on the open space at Kingsway and Patterson Avenue.
The 2009 Central Park Management Plan identified the large lawn area known as the “Triangle” — located northeast of the SkyTrain and BC Parkway and bordered by Kingsway and Patterson Avenue — as a prime space for active recreational use to support the growing community. With the Council’s backing, plans for the Central Park Triangle include a destination playground, civic plaza, flexible open lawn areas, washrooms, and concession facilities. These features aim to transform the area into a vibrant hub and establish a long-term vision for this currently underutilized corridor.
What’s Happening Now
The site analysis is complete, and a conceptual spatial program layout has been drafted. Community engagement for Phase 1 is nearing its conclusion, and an engagement summary report will be shared soon.
Looking Ahead to Phase 2
Phase 2 will involve a detailed planning process addressing larger and more complex sections of the park, including major facilities like Swangard Stadium and the Central Park Outdoor Pool. Once complete, the plans from both phases will be combined into a single comprehensive document with an actionable implementation plan.
